Go Red Sunday

WEAR RED TO CHURCH FEBRUARY 8

Join us on Sunday, February 8th as we wear red in support of “Go Red for Women”, a national movement led by the American Heart Association to increase awareness of heart disease in women.  February has been designated as American Heart Month, a time to focus on cardiovascular disease, how if affects women, the risk factors for CVD and what we can do to reduce those risks. Heart disease claims the lives of 460,000 women in our country annually.  It is the #1 killer of American women.  Nancy Fox led two informational meetings this week to help educate us on this disease.  Learn more about efforts to reduce death caused by cardiovascular disease at www.americanheart.org.

            Pastor's Perspective

The language is changing.  Legislation by our General Conference last year becomes effective with the beginning of this year, 2009.

A crucial detail of the legislation changes the language in the front of our United Methodist Hymnal— the language you often hear Cathe, or Ken, or me using as we welcome new members, and the language of our congregation's response.

The meaning of the change is something I have long understood and advocated: that our vow of loyalty is not just to the church or to a denomination, but through the church as disciples of Jesus Christ.   In other words, we are vowing our loyalty to Christ as his disciples, and that loyalty includes faithful membership in Christ's church, the Body of Christ.

A second change includes an addition that may take some of us long-timers a while to remember.   We have long spoken of our support through our prayers, presence, gifts, and service.   Now we also vow our support with “our witness.”

“As members of Christ's universal church, will you be loyal to Christ through The United Methodist Church, and do all in your power to strengthen its ministries?

            I will.

“As members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presences, your gifts, your service, and your witness?

            I will.

(Congregation's Response) We give thanks for all that God has already given you and we welcome you in Christian love.    As members together with you in the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness, that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.”

These words and this particular congregational response will become our new language for receiving new members in all our worship gatherings.

This Sunday, February 8, at our 8:45 am and 11 am worship services, and on February 15 at our 9 am service, I will invite the entire congregation to a renewal of our Baptism and church membership vows incorporating this new language.

May God help us to receive this change in a hospitable spirit, finding this not only to be an improvement in meaning, but a new occasion for deepening our commitment.

The new membership vows and ritual (complete with explanations) are now available on the General Board of Discipleship worship website at www.gbod.org/worship/default.asp/act=reader&item_id=46866&loc_id=9,824.
